Keown insists Everton must play Iwobi as a right wing-back
Following his dazzling performances for relegation-threatened English premier league side Everton, Nigerian International Alex Iwobi has been recommended to continue as a right wing-back.
Arsenal icon Martin Keown says this is necessary as playing Iwobi in that position would add steel, speed, energy and intensity to Everton’s battle to avoid the drop from the top echelon of English football.
The 27-year old was in outstanding form for the Merseyside club in their 1-0 win over Chelsea last week as he harassed and harried the South London billionaires all game.
Keown praised the Everton gaffer Frank Lampard for bringing the fight to the team with his gusty selections.
“They were tough, resilient, and the returning Yerry Mina was a commanding and important figure at the heart of that defence, particularly from set pieces,” he said.
“That’s an area from which Everton have struggled this season. Mina benefitted from having the mobile Seamus Coleman and Mason Holgate on either side of him, while the ever-improving Vitalii Mykolenko on the left and the versatile Alex Iwobi on the right.”
Having moved two-points clear to safety, Everton visit Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
A win or a draw will boost their survival hopes.
